4 Filipinos make it to Forbes' Philanthropy list

Four Filipinos have made it to the latest Forbes Asia "48 Heroes of Philanthropy" list in the Asia Pacific Region. The four, named in the June issue of Forbes Asia are John L. Gokongwei Jr., Henry Sy Sr., Joel S. Cruz, and Felino "Jun" A. Palafox Jr.

John L. Gokongwei Jr. 85, chairs one of the country's most well-endowed foundations, the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, launched in 1992 with his 3 brothers. He gave it half his JG Summit shares in 2006, a donation now worth more than $1 billion after a 4-year bull run on the stock. The foundation is the conglomerate's largest shareholder, with a 29.4% stake worth $2.3 billion.

Ilocos police nab Chinese nationals carrying weapons, explosives

PASUQUIN, Ilocos Norte—Four Chinese nationals carrying high-powered arms and improvised explosive devices were arrested on Tuesday evening at a police checkpoint here.

Police said Dennis Co, Dang Hoi Yin, Lui Xin and Lei Guang Feng were spotted at a gasoline station in Barangay Nagsanga. They were there for an hour when one of them suddenly threw a bottle of energy drink for still unknown reasons.

The management of the gasoline station reported the incident to the police who tailed the suspects’ vehicle.

This, as the Philippine economy exceeds expectations by expanding by 7.8 percent in the first quarter, a growth a Cabinet official says was among the fastest in the region.

The country's gross domestic product spike from January to March was the highest recorded in the Aquino administration, and the third consecutive quarter that registered above 7 percent growth.
