Mayweather to fight Alvarez in Las Vegas


World welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather will put his undefeated record on the line when he fights Mexican champ Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 14 in Las Vegas.
"I chose my opponent for September 14th and it's Canelo Alvarez," the 36-year-old Mayweather tweeted Wednesday night. "I'm giving the fans what they want."

Despite dispute, Chinese tourists still flock PH


More than 1.5 million foreign tourists have already visited the country in the first quarter of 2013 alone, the Department of Tourism said.
Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez noted the 1,649,458 visitors from all over the world represent a 10.12 percent increase in tourist arrivals compared to the same period last year.

New virus called ‘threat to the entire world’


The first death in France from a new SARS-like coronavirus brings the worldwide total for the disease to 27 deaths and 49 infections, CNN reports.
The 65-year-old Frenchman was diagnosed after returning from a stay in Dubai.

According to CNN, the World Health Organization has said the disease was first seen in Saudi Arabia last year. The virus is "a threat to the entire world," Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO's general director, told the network.

High doses of common pain drugs can cause heart attack: study


High doses of some commonly used pain drugs like ibuprofen can increase heart attacks, strokes and related deaths by about a third, a study warned on Thursday.
The drugs, known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are widely used to manage pain caused by inflammatory disorders.

Philippines' surprisingly strong first-quarter growth eclipses China


MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines on Thursday posted surprisingly strong growth in the first quarter, knocking China from pole position in Asia, driven by robust domestic consumption and government spending.
The stellar pace of expansion, which blew past expectations, pulled the peso up from an 11-month low and cemented views the central bank would leave its key policy rate on hold this year.

Ilocos police nab Chinese nationals carrying weapons, explosives


PASUQUIN, Ilocos Norte—Four Chinese nationals carrying high-powered arms and improvised explosive devices were arrested on Tuesday evening at a police checkpoint here.
Police said Dennis Co, Dang Hoi Yin, Lui Xin and Lei Guang Feng were spotted at a gasoline station in Barangay Nagsanga. They were there for an hour when one of them suddenly threw a bottle of energy drink for still unknown reasons.

The management of the gasoline station reported the incident to the police who tailed the suspects’ vehicle.

More good news for PH: First quarter GDP exceeds expectations


Looks like economy is beginning to be really more fun in the Philippines.
This, as the Philippine economy exceeds expectations by expanding by 7.8 percent in the first quarter, a growth a Cabinet official says was among the fastest in the region.

The country's gross domestic product spike from January to March was the highest recorded in the Aquino administration, and the third consecutive quarter that registered above 7 percent growth.

The Philippine Coast Guard fatally shot a Taiwanese fisherman a couple of weeks back after firing at a Taiwanese vessel that was reportedly trying to ram a Philippine boat within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines. Investigations have been conducted by several entities and findings seem to conflict on more than a few aspects. Sadly, nobody might ever know what really took place and under what circumstances.

Researchers found that women who have higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol are rated as having less attractive faces by men than their more relaxed counterparts.
Since stress can suppress fertility, study researcher Markus Rantala, a professor of biology at the University of Turku in Finland, told LiveScience, it's no surprise that both men and women might have evolved to prefer relaxed faces.

So said Vice Ganda, who faced his regular noontime show’s audience Wednesday after drawing flak for jokes he made about a top news anchor and rape.
The comedian urged critics, especially those who were not able to watch his concert or the video, to end discussions to incident which he said has been blown out of proportion and has somewhat turned into a "national issue."

“Sana po tapusin na natin ang isyung ito. Kung hindi niyo ako nauunawaan ako ang uunawa sa inyo,” Vice said.

PH lauded for management of natural resources

The Philippines has made "meaningful progress" in terms of governing natural resources, a global report said, particularly citing sweeping reforms in the country's mining sector.


New York-based Revenue Watch Institute (RWI) placed the Philippines 23rd out of 58 countries in terms of management of oil, gas and minerals.

The country bagged a score of 54 out of 100 points in the "Resource Governance Index" which RWI said is a basically a "measure of transparency and accountability."
